Starting off with number seven Dragons' Dogma now this was a hack and slash II action role-playing game at first glance it might look generic you know Knights swords mages dragons and castles the typical video game fantasy stuff but it's a Capcom joint straight from Japan one of the directors is freakin hit iake it's soon known for his work on Devil May Cry Power Stone and a bunch of other Capcom properties and it shows - man I mean it's essentially a Japanese take on a Western fantasy RPG and it kicks ass you choose a class and venture out into a big open fantasy world filled with lush vegetation and some big monsters to slay you have an artificial intelligence group party that follows you and you can give them some commands but one of those fun gameplay aspects was being able to grab and climb up on some enemies to get the advantage and get some critical attacks in it always looked cool and it was fun to do from a gameplay perspective really the combat flow and animations the characters and the general vibe really made this game feel special and it's unfortunate that a lot of people overlooked it thankfully it did get a new lease on life with a re-release on newer consoles with a lot of tweaks and new content with Dragon's Dogma dark arisen which we still recommend it very highly.
To include on this list now down to number two prototype yeah remember the prototypes both prototype 1 and 2 they were totally cool they were released in a weird time you know there were growing pains with the platforms and I'm just gaming in general not to mention the fact that these games were like weird grim dark edged lords later still the anti-hero thing was kind of fun like it was like a bit of like spider-man web of shadows except instead of saving people in the city of spider-man you're like a Resident Evil style lab horror creation man and you're just killing and exploding things this was also a time when you know Activation used to make games like this when they were down to experiment yeah I kind of miss those days you know like where some bigger corporations would spend a bunch of money on weird games like this well anyway you're Alex Mercer in this game who wakes up with shape-shifting powers and gets thrust into this vast conspiracy he wears a cool hood, and he's kind of angry and edgy but the game is so much more than that and it's so much fun it is larger than life you know you use your powers to leap massive distances you run up skyscrapers and you cut through enemy tanks with massive claws oh and I did do I mention it takes place in New York City as the playground it's really a good one for these powers really it's basically like the best thing next to web slinging that you could get during that time, and they did kind of quietly re-release these on modern consoles so you can get your hands on them and experience them if you want something that kind of feels like kind of like a time capsule time travel back to like the 2008-2009 era of gaming because it's very distinct yeah.
But over at number one Mad Max let's talk about this what a special surprise gem this game turned out to be at least for us here at game ranks released in 2015 it did drop the same week as Metal Gear Solid 5 the phantom pain so it was basically doomed to be brushed aside you know maybe people thought that's a licensed game it's based on a movie it's probably not that great whoa oh sit right down let me tell you about this game it's very tastefully and very lightly referenced fury road but did basically feel like its own new interpretation of Mad Max you are a fresh version of max out in a fresh version of the post-apocalyptic wasteland and it's you and your car you're working to upgrade both clearing out camps and bases with the open world style with freaky Mad Max style bad guys with the occasional guns but mostly Arkham style brutal combat the open world wasteland was big straight-up vast but like really lonely and mysterious you saw remnants of the past but some areas were so torn and twisted it felt like you were on another planet they also did a wonderful job of like you know the fact that everything's dried out desert they still used color and really creative ways to make different areas feel unique you had the time to observe the scenery while you were cruising around in your upgrade customized ride at least until you were attacked or came upon a convoy then you would engage in the games' car combat which was also surprisingly satisfying partially projectile based you have a helper who could among other things fire harpoons and other vehicles that really would mess him up the physics were fun the sense of speed was cool and it was just overall really satisfying and this and the melee combat combined actually made for a surprisingly challenging game at times it could get pretty shockingly difficult aside from some cookie cutter open world mission designs at some point how the heck did this game turn out so good well it was developed by Avalanche Studios the folks behind Just Cause so there's that now it wasn't a financial failure by any means but this game in particular really feels like one that people just completely forgot a month or so after release, so we want to remind you that Mad Max from 2015 is a good video game your grade.

Sleeping Dogs
Now over at number 6 Sleeping Dogs another game that just kicks ass man one of my favorite games ever actually in a world still recovering from rampant Grand Theft Auto clones Sleeping Dogs released and it felt like a breath of fresh air its arcade style gameplay and driving in action mixed with some good storytelling and fun but not like overly jam-packed open-world gameplay elements that just really made itself stand out especially with the fact that the combat really emphasized melee over gun play guns were in the game I'm sure you know but the main event was martial arts action punching and roundhouse kicks grabbing dudes and throwing them into the environment with interactive stuff set pieces some good melee weapons like knives and stuff chasing dudes through the streets of Hong Kong as a loose cannon undercover cop never got old the city was filled to with a surprising amount of detail and variety and plenty of opportunities for chaos and blood and bass punching and general destruction thankfully as much as we think it is often forgotten it has been ported to the newer generation consoles and yes it still holds up dude but over.

Stalker shadow
At number five let's talk about stalker shadow of Chernobyl hell yeah PC fans let's talk about this for the second shadow of Chernobyl has a big map, okay yeah it's loading but for its time it was one of the most intriguing irradiated wastelands for you to explore you know it's got that perfect spooky Chernobyl incident vibe and this was before we saw it depicted in more media like you know the original modern warfare a few months before and than eventually stuff like the excellent tour noble HBO show the zone here was just a great playground for survival and exploration this being a first-person survival horror shooter game with RPG Owens the gameplay was sweet but the landscape the zone really made it all that much sweeter despite being in pretty open areas and fields and stuff existing in the game was still unnerving plus there was a good amount of variety from woods to clearings to different types of weather buildings it was just awesome we still can't wait to see that new stalker game that they've been working on it'd been really quiet about fingers crossed we get some more information soon because this series needs to make a comeback.
Far Cry 2
Now on to number four Far Cry 2 ok this one isn't one that I personally like I don't really get it but a large group of fans will tell you otherwise yes even though initially Far Cry 2 wasn't like universally loved by fans is there's like a surprising amount of gamers that still to this day really love and defend this game praising both its ambitious ideas and its world the 2008 game had a come completely new story and characters and you were tasked with hunting down and assassinating the jackal this famous arms' dealer in Central Africa during the middle of a brutal civil war the setting was the unique aspect and really made this open-world game feel special it was like the kind of like a microcosm of a vertical slice of the content of Africa here like a little to everything you know the variety small town villages with buildings dense jungles savannas Plains all filled with wildlife and you had direct agency over all of it with some surprising levels of destruction it also just made for some great atmosphere a lot of it was really tense and unnerving while also being a little vast and mysterious if that makes sense there were some gameplay elements that some loved and some hated, but he can't deny that the world they built for you to exist in here was pretty awesome for the time.
The Saboteur
Now over at number three let's talk about the Cubit hua Saboteur Sabbath hua it's you know hard to pronounce for deaf Americans like me but it was from 2009 and it's a world war two German occupied France and you're dumped in an open world Paris that's completely black and white it's up to you to use stealth and espionage and guerrilla tactics to wrestle control from the Nazis and as you do weak in their control areas of the map get color again and like you see it actually manifested in the gameplay it was cool you know it wasn't perfect but really it was creative and just straight-up unlike anything else that really was released at the time in terms of open-world games despite that a lot of people never played it and people don't talk about it too much for a 2009 game it also gave you a surprising amount of the city to run around in and mess around in and also climb quite a bit and spend a lot of time on rooftops also it was pandemic studios the team behind the mercenary series Destroy All Humans Star Wars Battlefront we really miss them and EA closed them after this game you guys sometimes know we like to talk about deep cut pandemic games. And we thought the Sabbath was a perfect game.
